Chi Running Simplified

This is a technique used by runners to run efficiently. I have read some article about this technique but this video explain it as simple as impossible.  Chi Running was developed in 1999 by Danny Dreyer, an American ultra-marathon runner, t'ai chi practitioner, and founder of the North Carolina-based company Chi Running. It has been described as using relaxation and proper form when running and walking. Said to emphasize posture, core strength, relaxed legs, and mindfulness. it has been said that this technique leads to fewer injuries and runners who have been previously injured claimed that they are able to return running using this kind of method.

Watch the video below and learn how to achieve efficient running and lesser injury.

Running behind another Runner more Efficient?

If you look at a group of mountain biker or a road biker on the road, they often deliberately ride close behind each other, and you ask yourself why do they do this? They do this to conserve energy, by letting the front biker take all the air resistance while the back rider could rest. I know this works because I have done this many times and to be frank it actually works for me. But I was wondering if this method could also work on running?

After a lot of thought I tried to research it on the web looking for someone, if somebody have tried this.

After a lot of reading, I read one article saying that “Jogging or running at 5mph into a 15mph headwind will increase your calorie burning by about 15% compared to still air. While turning around and jogging at the same speed with a 15 mph tailwind will decrease your calories burning by about 5% compared to still air”.

What his trying to say is, if you jog or run against the wind you exert more effort therefore use more energy, losing more calories, and if you run towards the wind you save 5% of your energy.

Then it is true that you lose more calories if there is a strong headwind or wind that is against the direction you are running, but if there is no or less headwind the amount of wind resistance is less therefore lesser energy lost or none at all.

Bikers regularly do Drifting (this is what they call it) because biker move at a much faster speed than a regular runner. Bikers exert more effort and energy to maintain speed because wind resistance is greater therefore drifting save them more energy.

I believe that runners could also use drifting if he increases his speed or there is a strong headwind. Wind  increases a runners speed relative to the wind and this increases the wind  resistance, thus it is more efficient for a runner runs at the back of another runner letting that runner block the headwind.

Join the Running Revolution with Adidas Energy Boost

The Adidas has just announced its new product, the Energy Boost™ running shoes. Adidas known to be the leading sport brand in the world and a global leader within the sporting goods industry, offering a broad range of product around its core brands: adidas, Reebok, TaylorMade, Rockport and Reebok-CCM Hockey.

The release of their new product says it’s going to revolutionize the sports of running with its new technology the “ENERGY BOOST™. The innovation is centered on a proprietary cushioning material BOOST™, this material will allow the runner to feel continuous energy return, and this could mean an increase in your stride length. Increase in stride means increase in distance traveled. The impressive cushioning effect of this material will also help runners cushion every time your foot lands on the ground therefore reduces leg injury.

The material has also been proven to hold its performance even in the harshest condition, even three times more temperature-resistant than the standard EVA material. EVA is short for Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate, extremely elastic and have excellent toughness. If this is better than EVA then this would provide a more consistent and comfortable run than any existing shoes on the market today.

Bern Wahler Head of the Innovation for Adidas said, “As a revolutionary material, BOOST™ combines the usually conflicting performance benefits of soft and comfortable with firm and responsive cushioning. It almost makes the shoe come to life, and you will feel it from the first moment you put it on. It sets a new standard, not only for running shoes, but for the entire industry, and all products going forward”.

WOW, what a bold way to say it, if this is true then we might have a great shoe that could perhaps surpass all existing shoe in the market, I will not be surprise if runners would dub this “the running shoes on steroid” and the best part is, it’s practically legal.

Adidas did not just stop on boosting your run. Energy BOOST™ also goes beyond the revolutionary midsole technology. The upper on the Energy BOOST™ features Adidas techfit technology, which provides optimal comfort and support to the entire foot while in motion.

More features include a special mid-foot support frame, an extended TORSION® system to minimize roll for more stability, adiwear outsole to reduce wear in key soles areas and an external heel counter to maximize the heel fit and comfort.

The Adidas Energy Boost™ is miCoach compatible, it is a training tool developed by Adidas, this works in three part system with a stride sensor, a heart monitor, and a receiver that talks to you. It is practically a personal virtual coach.

Adidas Energy Boost™ retails at Php 7995 and will be available for pre-order at adidasboost.com from 15th until 24th of February. Pre-ordered pair will then be ready for pick up on the 27th of February at adidas Bonifacio Global City.

Bike ride to Dahilayan

This is the route last Sunday February 10, 2013, when we were planning to go to Dahilayan but failed. The elevation and the distance was just to much for me, since i just got back from biking last month. This was supposed to be a 120 kilometer plus bike ride, instead i opt to take the 79 kilometer. I still need to condition my body before a could go back to that place since last year.

Camelbak made in the Philippine

Taken from the word "Camel" which means in Hebrew verb root meaning to bear or carry is known to most people as the animal of the desert. The distinctive features of this animal is the "humps". Hump, the bulge found on it's back was once believed to store water but it is actually a fat deposit.

The fatty deposit or the hump minimizes the insulating effect of fat helping camels survive in hot climate. when the fat is metabolized  it yields more than one gram of water for every gram of fat processed. well what do you know the hump actually produce water too. Enough with the facts, what i am really trying to say is  about camelbak hydration packs, known for as one of the best in the world. Camelbak is the supplier of hydration packs, protective gear, and other products to the U.S. Military and law enforcement agencies around the world. The quality of their product is unquestionable. The best part is, it's MADE IN THE PHILIPPINES!

My brother who has a camelbak lets me barrow it every time a go biking and it really is a good hydration pack. The pack actually hold 1.5 to 3 liters of water in one go. Water during a long bike ride was one of my problem before so i was thankful that a get to borrow one from my brother.

Three ways i Run

There are three ways to run. First is the Rear-foot Strike more commonly known as heel strike. Many people don't know this but most of the people who are new in running actually run on heel strike. Why people do this is because people are soo accustom running with their shoes that they don't feel the full impact of their heel landing on the ground. This is usually one of the major causes of leg injury. Imagine all your body weight hit that heel without any shoes eventually something has to give in. The other disadvantage of this type of running is when you move forward, your heel striking the ground produce a braking effect reducing speed and momentum.

Second is Mid-foot strike, landing at the  middle of your foot when it hits the ground that is a midfoot strike. It is better to land midfoot than to land on heel strike. This technique is best when you try to slow down from a fast pace of running. Midfoot strike known for runner as a resting period in running. When you’re out of breath and need rest while still moving forward then midfood is the way to run.

Forefoot strike is by-far the best way to run. Forefoot would be the result of running barefoot. Running forefoot increase your speed, reduce foot injury and use less energy. This is the most efficient way to run in long distance. By leaning slightly forward forefoot uses gravity to accelerate and momentum to maintain speed.

Overall heel strike is for walking, midfoot is for slowing down, forefoot is for acceleration.

Carbo-loading for Fun Run

What is Carbo-loading?
If you research it in Google, Wikipedia will tell you that it is a strategy used by endurance athletes. Carbo actually means Carbohydrate food. This would be fruits, sweets, soft drinks, breads, pastas, beans, potato, bran, rice and cereal. Loading means you have to eat plenty of Carbohydrates because this is a source of energy in all living organisms. This means that Carbohydrate is our very own fuel for running or any physical activity.

When we run a full marathon which is 42.195 kilometers our body burn both glycogen and fat. Glycogen is the carbohydrates stored in our muscles. We first consume the glycogen since this is the most available energy that our body consumes. But latter on when we became fatigue in long run our body will use up all its stored glycogen in our muscle this means we have hit “the wall”. When this happens our body has to slow down as it converts fat into energy, another available energy use by our body. Fat is only use by our body as a backup, that is why we have to store more and more glycogen as possible.

How do we store more glycogen in our body?
Your body can’t fill your muscles with glycogen from just one meal. Event organizers in Cagayan de Oro usually have a carbo-loading session the night before the race but we have to be careful not to eat too much at one point in time. Carbo-loading should be done 3 to 2 days prior to a race as suggested by professional runner. Let the glycogen accumulate in your muscle for 3 to 2 days since you will be running fewer kilometers during training.
At the start of the race day expect that you will gain a few pounds on your weight. Usually you will gain about 4 pounds or even more.

Runners best Apps for Android and iOS

I have been using this apps since i got my android Samsung Galaxy Y and the best part is, it's FREE. It can track your activity and gives you the data you really need when training, just like any other GARMIN GPS watch available in the market. Once activated it will give you speed, pace, and a map of your route. There is also a hearth monitor available but you have to order it online from their website. For more information on this apps please watch the video above.

Coconut water better Sport drink than Gatorade?

Coconut Vendor in the Philippines
Health conscious people are now choosing to drink coconut water than any other sport drink available in the market. What makes coconut water better than any other sport drink? Well coconut water contains low calories, it has two times higher potassium than Banana and it actually is fat and cholesterol free. People in the Running community actually say that this is evidently better than any sport drink available in the market plus as an added bonus it’s all natural.

Compared to typical sport drinks, coconut water has fewer calories, less sodium, but higher amount of potassium and it has less sugar than sport drink. Pepsi and Coca Cola already have their own brand for coconut water. They are hoping to capture P1 billion of the estimated P1.2 billion coco water market potential.

Pepsi has Tropicana Coco Quench which was unveiled last September 28, 2012. Their product will be available in 330 ml and one liter tetra-pak. Which will retail for P30 and P80, respectively.
Coca-Cola Co. in the other hand has plans to exercise its option in acquiring a majority stake in Zico, the No. 2 coco-water brand in the U.S. by sales.

As for me, Coconut in the near future is going to be a good business here in Cagayan de Oro, with its increasing health conscious sport drinker population. Local brand in the Philippines will eventually pop up and coco farmers will soon be a happy farmer.
